Luke Donald just won the Accenture World Matchplay Championship, beating new world #1 Martin Kaymer. The commentators continually mentioned how mechanically good Luke looked over the golf ball. The same compliment was given to Martin Kaymer. What I witnessed was Luke Donald displaying his skills as the #1 matchplay player in the world.
Luke's game was excellent this week, as it was during the Playoffs for the FedEx Cup and the Ryder Cup in 2010.
What makes Luke an excellent match play golfer?
1. Good Driver, Luke is a good off the tee, which keeps him in every hole.
2. Precision Iron player, challenging his playing opponent to hit it inside him.
3. Beautiful Short game, his touch is masterful, setting up many one putt greens.
4. Clutch Putter, he makes it when he needs to.
5. Excellent course manager, evidenced by his masterful par-5 play this week.
Luke is a model that all of our junior and college players should model their games on. He excels when the courses get tougher and I believe that will only help him as he pursues his first professional major. A solid repeating full swing, that is accompanied by the feel and touch of an artist (which Luke Donald is). Luke Donald is an excellent model for our up and coming golf generation.
Congratulations to Luke for his excellent win from a fellow Englishman. Good luck in the majors this year. As a young man I loved to play Matchplay and I love to watch it. I wish there was more Matchplay golf played in the professional arena.
Ken Jowdy File delivers this news about European Golfer of the Year candidate Luke Donald. Colin Montgomerie’s is casting his vote for Luke Donald for European Golfer of the Year despite Rory McIlroy and Darren Clarke both surpassing the Englishman by winning majors.
